Students in the Photo Essentials class will take a trip to the zoo to snap pictures of the scenery, the people and the animals. After they take the photos, instructor Neil Ralston said, they plan to come back to campus and critique their work.

Ralston, a journalism teacher at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO., said, “That’s basically what it is. It’s going out and practicing and coming back and talking about it and going out and practicing and coming back and talking about it.”

Photo student Aimee Clive, from Francis Howell North High School, said, “I just wanna learn more about how to use the cameras and basically how to take good photos because I kinda like to explore new forms of journalism.”

Ralston said, “(I want students to) understand the difference between what makes a good photograph and a not so good photograph and to sorta spark their interest in the craft.”
