Madi Winfield, St. Teresa High School
“I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma at age 14. I had gotten some tests done ’cause I was having some leg pain or whatever, then one day my dad was like, ‘OK Madi, you need to stay overnight in a hospital. Pack a bag.’ And so I did, ya know?
That was a Friday and this was, like, Tuesday. I had already gotten a bunch of scans and stuff. My hospital room was right across from the craft room, like the kids’ room. I was making this craft thing with paper maché and whatever and I see like seven or eight doctors go into my room and I know my mom is in there, so I’m like, ‘Oh, so they must be just telling her how the tests went yesterday.’ And then they didn’t come for like half an hour, and that’s the moment when I realized something was wrong.”
